Deciding not to make the long trek home for fall break proved to be a very good decision, craft-wise. Stuck in Fort Worth while everyone was out of town, I had ample time to work on a few projects that I had found on Pinterest, my current obsession and source of endless inspiration.

The first was a painting of a bare tree on canvas with buttons glued on as leaves. A simple, yet impressive looking project was exactly what I needed to start of my long weekend crafting extravaganza. The directions are easy to follow and leave you with a beautiful piece of artwork. You only need a canvas, tan paint, dark brown paint, assorted buttons, and glue.

  1. Paint the entire canvas tan. Let dry, then use the dark brown to paint a bare tree. Let dry again.
  2. Attach buttons at random to look like foliage.

Et voila! You’re done. Here is my finished product (sorry for the poor photo quality).

The next project I attempted was a more modern, artsy piece that used painters tape to section off a canvas into sections and stripes. It was also very simple and does not require any artistic talent, as the tape keeps you from painting outside the lines. I recommend using a neutral color palette and one statement color.

  1. Use painters tape to create zig zags and lines across a canvas.
  2. Paint the different sections different colors. Apply three coats and let dry.
  3. Remove the tape and enjoy finished product.

The last project I came up with on my own, with a little inspiration from all the craft ideas on Pinterest using maps. I bought two small, green storage boxes while browsing the dollar aisle at Target with the idea of using them to store the game controllers and other gadgets for my Wii. However, the boxes looked so plain on the shelf that I knew I had to find a way to spruce them up. Which is where I got the idea to mod podge them with cut up pieces of maps from an old book of maps of the 50 states. This is truly a “no-brainer” craft that you can do while watching TV, but the finished product is so polished and unique. All you need is mod podge a some maps!
